Every Nigerian knows Wizkid. Let me rephrase that, everybody knows Wizkid! There are obviously some parts of the world that Afrobeats has not touched yet and they could be unknown to this genre, hence not knowing who Wizkid is but not to worry, I will give you a little background.

Ayo Balogun was born and raised in Ojuelegba, Lagos. He started his career in the church. He got discovered by one of Nigeria’s music veterans, Banky W who is legally known as Banky Wellington. It was a very good start for Wizkid because he got signed to a very hot group back then by the name EME (Empire Mates Entertainment), which included Nigeria’s hottest rising stars like Skales, Shaydee, Niyola, DJ Xclusive, and of course the veteran himself, Banky W. They released a group album which put all these artists at the top of the charts. Listen to the album below.

Before that, Wizkid released an album that already put him on top just at the beginning of his career. Every single song on this album was a hit and that was when I knew that Wizkid was not leaving the music industry any time soon. The title of this album is ‘SuperStar’. Listen to the album below.

My favourites? I love every single song!

Shortly after this album dropped, Wizkid became the man that you needed to feature on your song! Listen to some of my favorite features below.

Shortly after that, Wizkid released his second album which is a self titled album called Ayo. He decided to give us a change of sound which led to the mainstream movement of Afrobeat, lowkey. This album featured international starts like Wale, Akon and Tyga. Listen to the album below.

My Favorites:

Jaiye Jaiye | Show You The Money | Ojuelegba | Kind Love | On Top Your Matter | For You | Ki Lo Fe | Bombay | Caro

After some years of working with EME, Wizkid switched things up and started his own record label called StarBoy Music. He has since collaborated with a wide range of artists both local and international. Artists like Drake,  Maleek Berry, Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, R2Bees,Ty Dolla Sign,Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Major Lazer, and many more. This then leads me to his latest album titled ‘Sounds From The Other Side’. I think the album title is a clear description of the songs on the album. He decided to feature a number of artists that would help him take the african sound global and introduce it to other people. Listen to the album below.

My Favorites:

Come Closer | Naughty Ride | African Bad Gyal | Daddy Yo | One For Me | Picture Perfect | Nobody | All For Love | Dirty Wine

Wizkid has shown what it takes to go from nothing to something. He has changed the lives of so many and still is. He is a great example of what it means to be an african artist because he carries his sound wherever he goes, he does not switch up his sound for anybody and that is why I admire him a lot.

I will definitely be following Wizkid till the very end and I am very excited to see what he has in store for us as the years go by. Keep up with Wizkid: Instagram, Twitter, Youtube(Wizkid), YouTube(StarBoy Music)Soundcloud.
